Oaklands School…. MOVE Centre of Excellence for the 3rd  time! (November 2020)

Oaklands School has been using the MOVE Programme since 2003 and first achieved Centre of Excellence status in 2012 and was re-accredited in 2016 and again in 2020 .

MOVE (which stands for Mobility Opportunities Via Education) is an activity- based programme based on team working. It uses the combined knowledge of education staff, therapists and families to teach our children the skills of sitting, standing, walking and transferring to the best of their ability.

Using MOVE, a pupil works towards their agreed goals and targets. These can vary, and range from being able to raise and hold their head up independently so they can access a communication aid, to being able to walk unaided in their home, take steps in a walker, go up and down stairs or walk on the grass in the garden.  Each goal is aimed at teaching functional skills that the child will need as an adult to be as independent as possible.

Oaklands School is firmly committed to following the practises of the MOVE programme.  There is a dedicated MOVE Team in school that is headed up by 2 MOVE Coordinators.  A small team of MOVE trainers and senior practitioners supports the rest of the school staff in implementing MOVE and ensuring that our pupils can work towards their targets.  The MOVE team also work closely with parents and therapists considering them an integral part of the team around the child that supports them in working towards their skills.

At Oaklands, we are very proud to be recognised as a MOVE Centre of Excellence.  To retain this status, a centre is asked to successfully complete MOVE’s Quality assurance process: MOVE Quality Mark. To ensure that the MOVE Programme continues to be delivered to a high standard, the Quality Mark process is repeated on a 3-yearly basis.

MOVE’s feedback following our most recent assessment:

“Oaklands School are an example of best practice in the MOVE Programme. Since their last Centre of Excellence assessment in November 2016, they have continued to deliver MOVE to a high standard. The high level of buy-in from the therapy team and the school’s commitment to growing a highly trained MOVE team ensures that all students are well supported.”
